Hello biffs. Working in Holland and the hotel I'm staying in has free wifi accessed via KPN Hotspots.
Supposedly I open my browser and should be prompted to agree to terms before accessing the net.
Problem is that browser doesn't find the page. I have tried connecting to the KPN network and then looking for the home page, but nowt happening.
The status is showing local connection with the exclamation mark. When I click on properties it shows data being transferred but no internet connection.
The bloke at the hotel tried to be helpful but to no avail.
Anyone know if there's a setting I need to change and how I do it, without putting myself at risk of fuggin up me bastud laptop altogether?
In the meantime, I can get wireless on my phone, so all not lost.
TIA.
PS: I have switched the fugger off and on again. Countless times.

Copy and paste the message please (also, if you have another browser installed, try with that and report the error too.) The exclamation mark is saying you have limited connectivity so you're probably connected to that OK. (I had this exact issue on Monday when on the train to that there London. My DNS settings on my wireless adaptor had been changed - by me - from the default to something specific which proper fucked me for getting to the main Virgin Wifi page.)

Perhaps the work laptop considers it too much of an insecure connection, it is possible.
If you can see the network via the wireless network finder and it still has an exclamation mark then that could be it.
Or they've just got shit wifi.

I am working in an office at present, so will try to give you the specific error later. It's the usual 'problem loading page' type message that you get when not connected. I've tried 3 different browsers, all with the same result (Firefox, Google Chrome and IE). How di I access DNS settings and what do I look for (basic English if poss)?

I suspect the latter, although hotel bloke said they don't often have problems (he would say that, I suppose). It's my own laptop (used for work), so not sure about settings - not an expert.

I've tried 3 different browsers, all with the same result (Firefox, Google Chrome and IE). How di I access DNS settings and what do I look for (basic English if poss)? This assumes Windows 7: When on the laptop, right click your wireless signal icon in the bottom right. Click Open Network And Sharing Centre. Click Change Adapter Setting on left hand side. You'll now have a number of connections on your laptop. Look for the wireless one. Right click it and click Properties. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4. In the next window you want both options to be Obtain automatically. If they aren't, note the current values down as you might need them when somewhere else - they would have been changed for a reason. Click OK, and OK again. Close all windows. Reboot (not necessary but can't hurt). If you had the same issue as me (doubtful, to be honest, but you never know) that should fix it. I was messing and playing with Google's DNS servers (BT's are utter shit) and forgot I'd done it. OK for home, shit on a train. Let us know the error messages Dude and let's see if that helps narrow the prob.

By changing the settings as above, will it fug anything for when I get back home, ie: will I need to change settings back again? As I say, not the end of the world as I have wireless on the phone, but would be handy to download emails and attachments etc.

As I say, not the end of the world as I have wireless on the phone, but would be handy to download emails and attachments etc. Not a prob. I'll be honest and say that I don't think this is your issue as it's unusual to change them to be honest. It might be, of course, but it's doubtful IMO. Reason is that most users never have to change their DNS settings. If it is it though, just note them down (email them to your self and write them down on paper) as it's easy to change them back by following the steps I've said earlier. This laptop, when at home, who do you connect with? Virgin? BT? You wouldn't have any VPN software or use a proxy or anything would you?
