Sorry if I'm showing a shade of hogging the limelight slightly following the lengthy thread about Frankie Boyle. I guess, I hope my views may be given a shade more weight as an aspiring comic myself.
Since doing a comedy course and writing my own material continually, several hours a week, I see him and many other comedians in a very different light.
What has surprised me is I actually rate him a lot higher now than I did a year or 2 ago. He is clearly a bright guy and many of his lines are very well-crafted.
I think he deliberately hams it up with the shock material as a backlash to the PC brigade, who seem to try and eradicate all manner of humour.
Jimmy Carr, to my mind is just as bad, and I really dislike him. He has thekind of face I'd like to see my size 11s landing in.
However, personal taste aside, whilst some things like blatant racism is out of line comedians need some slack and I can see we'll get all manner of other isms in time in our so serious world nowadays.
Gingerism is surely something that I can see happening before long. Will heightism also be on the agenda?
What makes people laugh is often all the little idiosyncrasies about people and how different we all are.
Boyle is a comedian and not spouting out stuff in the name of a political party. He should be taken in context. Time to lighten up. It's not meant to be taken seriously FFS.
That point over think there are a lot of good comics out there. A fave of mine is a lad called John Wagstaffe, from Tewkesbury, who beat me in a gong show in Worcester about 3months back.
Equally, it genuinely shocks me is how useless some of the comedians I've seen on TV is, with dire material. One that particularly stands out is a simply awful performance by Noel Fielding on Live at the Apollo.
If he did that at the Lamp Tavern in Dudley he would have ended up in Bathams!
However, what has to be remembered is comedy is like music. We all have our own taste.
As for myself, have penned some new material about the Olympics and other stuff, which I'll be adding in my set when I'm in the heats of Brum New Comedian of the Year on 23rd of this month.
Anyhow, sorry to hog the limelight, but wanted a platform for my twopennethworth.
For those of you who haven't already, here is my YouTube clip of my debut.
